Watch Your Tongue: James 3: 1-12, Part 2

This Sunday we continue our series in James and will be looking at chapter 3 verses 1-12. This is part 2 on this passage. In this passage James continues to talk about the infamous and much problematic tongue.  James says to be very careful about it, and then gives warnings why the tongue can be such a problem for us toward others. Four warnings total…(last week the 1st two)

In this message we will look at point 3 and focus on the warning of the tongue’s destruction.  James likens it to an out-of-control forest fire.  How much destruction can the untamed tongue do?  We will give 10 examples, including gossip, meanness, sarcastic humor, boasting, blasphemy, cursing, innuendo, lying, flattery, and body language.

So dear Christian, be careful!  As the children’s song says:

O be careful little mouth what you say,                                                                                                O be careful little mouth what you say,                                                                                                  For the Father up above, is looking down in love;                                                                           So be careful little mouth what you say,

be careful tongues, what you say. Think before you speak. Watch out for harmful words!  The tongue is a fire – it has unbelievable POWER.  The Psalmist prayed this way:

“Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth,                                                                                          keep the door of my lips.”  Psalm 141:3
